Description
Journal kept aboard schooner MARY C. AMES of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Bailey, master, for a cod fishing voyage to Newfoundland. Contains description of crowded conditions in forecastle, fishing in heavy seas, using a "tag boat" with nets to catch bait and the dressing of cod. Mentions death of a crew member, and relates a story of an American fishing vessel being captured near Cape Sable by British warship. Journal keeper made this voyage to improve his health.
